This Just In!

Casting for the blockbuster movie based on the Mandrake the Magician comic strip in underway and they've just cast Criss Angel as Mandrake!

From FilmWad.com, via Cinematical:

A real life magician playing a magician in a movie? Never, you say. Think again, we say. It looks like television's second favorite magician (The first one starts with "David" ad ends with "Blaine"), Criss Angel, will be starring in an upcoming adaptation of the depression era comic series, Mandrake the Magician. The film, which will be loosely based on the comic strip, based on Mr. Mandrake, a magician with special hypnotic powers who likes to duke it out with mad scientists and criminals. Sounds pretty tempting, in a ridiculous way.

Controversy is sure to surround the production methods, which as of this writing call for a "limited use" of CGI to enhace Mr. Angel's performance. Seems a bit like taking Viagra before a porno shoot. Probably done, but never talked about. Could this bekon a backlash from Criss Angel's devoted fans and magician apprentices? God we hope not. I really don't think that the world could possibly handle a full scale magician uprising. Yowza!

What do you guys think about this casting?

I would've much preferred to see Blaine in the role but I'll reserve judgment until I see the film. I hope no one bitches too much about the CGI. This is a movie from a comic book, not a movie about a real-life magician, fer crying out loud!

Interesting. Mandrake is a pretty hokey magical character by today's standards, what with the top hat and the cape. Do they intend to update the image to a more contemporary street image? If so, Criss might be a good choice.
On the other hand, if they are going to use CGI for the magic, they might've been better off casting an established actor with box office pull(as was done with "The Illusionist" and "The Prestige" to give the project more credibility.
I grew up watching "The Magician" with Bill Bixby, when all the magic was actually peformed for the camera without special effects aid nor special editing. Used to love that, and I think an updated version of that done today would be great for someone like Angel or Blaine. With Mandrake, however, the magic is of a pulpy, comic book type, and the use of cgi is completely appropriate.

I read on another blog that he was in the film but not Mandrake.
